Spider Pest Control FAQ\’s

Seeing spiders around your home? You are not alone. Spiders are one of the most common household pests in Australia and one of the most feared pests.
While most spiders are not dangerous, there are several spider species in Sydney that can give a nasty bite so it is best to avoid dealing with them yourself.
That’s where So Pest Off comes in with our spider pest control service..

Found Spiders? Here’s What to Do

If you spot a spider in your home, avoid disturbing it. Many spiders retreat into hard-to-reach places when threatened, making them harder to treat. Instead, contact So Pest Off and we will schedule a fast, professional service to deal with the problem safely and thoroughly.

The So Pest Off Difference

Spiders often enter homes in search of food, which usually means other insects are already present. That is why we deliver a comprehensive General Pest Control Treatment that eliminates both spiders and the bugs they feed on.

How We Treat for Spiders and Insects

Our licensed technicians use an integrated approach to control spider activity and prevent future infestations. Treatment includes:

  • Internal barrier spray along skirtings, cornices and entry points to stop spiders from entering and nesting indoors
  • Subfloor dusting to target spiders and insects living underneath the property
  • External perimeter spray to create a protective barrier around the entire home

This method ensures that spiders and other crawling insects are controlled both inside and out. We also provide expert advice on pest proofing your home to help reduce entry points and eliminate spider hiding spots.

We highly recommend So Pest Off Pest Control for termite and general pest control. From the initial booking through to the completion of the treatment, the whole experience was excellent. The team was professional, punctual, friendly, and took the time to explain the termite and pest treatment process clearly. They were very thorough in inspecting the property and addressing the areas of concern rather than simply doing a quick spray and leaving. I particularly appreciated their attention to detail and the way they answered all of my questions. It was clear that they genuinely cared about doing the job properly and making sure our home was protected. The service was professional, efficient, and provided great peace of mind. If you're looking for a reliable company for termite inspections, termite treatment, or general pest control, I would definitely recommend So Pest Off Pest Control. Excellent service from start to finish. Thank you!

1

Spider pest Control

Yes spiders are included!
We treat for web-building spiders such as redbacks, black house spiders and white tails. Our internal and external spray targets nesting areas and entry points to break the cycle and reduce sightings.
Note:: Ground-dwelling spiders like trapdoors, wolf spiders and funnel webs live in burrows and are not fully covered, as they require specialist treatment. Read why spiders can be difficult to treat

2

Cockroach pest control

Yes, we target cockroaches!
If you are dealing with large outdoor cockroaches like the Australian and smoky brown species, we’ll knock them out with our general pest spray. These pests are often found in kitchens, bathrooms and roof voids.
Note:: German cockroaches require a separate treatment due to their breeding rate and resistance. Please ask us for more info if you suspect these smaller indoor roaches.

3

Bugs and Crawling Insects

Yes, we treat a wide range of insects!
Our general pest service covers silverfish, ants, flies, mosquitoes, vinegar flies and even stink bugs. We treat high-risk areas like windows, drains, skirtings and corners where these pests often gather.
Note:: We can’t stop flying insects from entering through open doors or windows, but the treatment works when they land on a treated surface.

4

ticks and fleas

Yes, stray fleas and ticks are covered!
We apply targeted treatment to stop fleas and ticks carried in by pets before they can multiply and take hold in carpets or bedding.
Note:: If you are dealing with a full flea outbreak, a specialised flea treatment will be required for complete eradication.

Preventing Spiders in Your Home

Spider prevention is a key part of long-term pest management. We help reduce spider activity by identifying and sealing common entry points, such as cracks in walls, gaps around windows, and spaces under doors. Installing flyscreens on openable windows is also an effective way to stop spiders from getting inside.

Keeping your home and garden free from clutter limits the areas where spiders can hide and build webs. A tidy space also reduces nesting zones for other pests like cockroaches and rodents, which spiders feed on. If you use a wood heater, be cautious with your firewood pile as redbacks and huntsmen are often found in and around stacked timber.
Firewood also attracts termites, so it is best to store only what you need and keep the pile neat and elevated.

To stay on top of spider prevention, vacuum and dust your home regularly. Focus on corners, ceilings and skirting boards where webs tend to appear. Combined with a general pest treatment, these simple habits go a long way toward keeping spiders out.

How To Get The Most Effective Pest Control Results

  • Spiderwebs are tempting to clean off, but to allow the solution to work its best we recommend to leave cobwebs for at least 10 days or until they naturally fade away
  • Post treatment you might have residue on your windows from the outside. Please leave this for as long as possible.
  • We spray window frames from the outside, and we recommend not cleaning these. If you have dust sitting on the window-sills lightly wipe it off with a dry paper towel.
  • Clothes lines and council bins can be hosed down 1 week post treatment. Please ensure you are wearing gloves and closed sole shoes when walk on these areas as they have been sprayed.
  • Having your lawn mowed down and any excess dry leaves cleaned will improve your results.
  • We do not spray furniture or counter tops, but we will spray the skirting boards. Please allow five – seven days before mopping your floors.
  • If you have dust on your skirting boards and wish to clean this, please use the vacuum extension head or a dry paper towel.
  • Please note if you outsource your home cleaning it is important to delay floor mopping internally by at least one week to ensure that the invisible barrier applied is not impacted or organize cleaning prior to your pest control.

Six monthly pest controls will improve your results and keep pests at a manageable level

So Pest Off Pty Ltd provides warranty inline with chemical labels (12 weeks internal). So Pest Off Pty Ltd honors this internal warranty for all general pest controls.

A warranty call out is provided at no charge to the customer where an infestation has re-occurred within the stated period from Australian/American cockroaches, webbing spiders and ants where a specialized ant treatment has been executed.

A spot treatment is done in the impacted area only.
Warranty is provided on all full-priced work after second treatment (unless stated otherwise).

Spider Pest Control FAQ’s

Spider pest control costs vary based on property size, infestation severity, and treatment type required. For accurate pricing tailored to your situation, please visit our pricing page or contact us for a free quote.

While most Sydney spiders are harmless, some like redback spiders and funnel-web spiders can deliver dangerous bites requiring medical attention. It’s best to avoid handling any spider and call professional pest control to safely remove them, especially if you see webs in occupied areas of your home.

Spider treatments begin working immediately upon application. You’ll notice a significant reduction in spider activity within 24-48 hours, with full effectiveness achieved within one week. Our treatments provide residual protection for 3-6 months depending on environmental conditions.

It’s easy to get wrong, so treat any big black spider with care. Sydney funnel-webs are shiny and dark brown to black, and their burrows have silk trip-lines spreading out from the entrance. Sydney brown trapdoor spiders look dusty, with golden-brown hairs, and their burrows have a neat silk collar with no trip-lines. Mouse spiders have a big, shiny head and jaws, and a bite is treated like a funnel-web bite. Black house spiders are not related at all and build lacy webs in window frames. NSW Health treats a bite from a big black spider as a medical emergency.

Yes. The Australian Museum puts the Sydney funnel-web’s main range from the Central Coast south to the Georges River, reaching as far west as Baulkham Hills, and the Atlas of Living Australia has 17 records within 10 km of Seven Hills. Males leave their burrows looking for females over summer and autumn, mostly at night and often after wet weather. That is when they turn up in backyards and pools, so shake out shoes left outside and wear gloves in the garden.

It depends on the spider. For a bite from a funnel-web, a mouse spider or any big black spider you can’t identify, keep the person still, apply a pressure immobilisation bandage over the bite and then the whole limb, and call an ambulance. For a redback bite, don’t bandage it, because pressure makes the pain worse, and see a doctor. For most other spiders, a cold pack can ease the pain and no other first aid is needed, but get medical help if symptoms develop or persist. The Poisons Information Centre is on 13 11 26, and if you can catch the spider safely, it helps identify it.

Common signs include frequent spider webs in corners, ceiling edges, and outdoor areas, regular spider sightings indoors (especially at night), egg sacs in hidden areas, and shed spider skins. If you’re seeing multiple spiders daily, you likely have an infestation requiring professional treatment.

There are plenty of spiders in Sydney. Here are 22 you may come across around homes and gardens in Western Sydney and the Hills District, with how to spot each one, whether the bite is a worry and whether our treatment is likely to reach it.

Our treatment targets webbing spiders that build on walls and in corners, because those are the areas we treat. There’s no guarantee a spider that walks around hunting will cross the treated areas, and burrowing spiders are out of reach.

Sydney funnel-web spider: shiny, dark brown to black, living in silk-lined burrows under logs and rocks. Over summer and autumn the males wander into yards and pools, and sometimes houses. A bite is a medical emergency: keep the person still, apply a pressure immobilisation bandage over the bite and the whole limb, and call an ambulance. Antivenom is available. Like other burrowing spiders, it is out of our treatment’s reach.
Redback spider: black with a red stripe on the back and a red hourglass underneath, with messy webs in sheds, under steps and in rubbish piles. Only the female’s bite is dangerous. See a doctor, and don’t bandage it. It is one of the web-building spiders our treatment targets.
Black house spider: dark with grey hairs, building lacy webs with a funnel-shaped hideout in window frames and wall crevices. It is timid, but a bite can be quite painful and swell. Its webs often sit in the window frames we spray.
White-tailed spider: a dark, cigar-shaped body with a white tip, hunting other spiders at night in bathrooms, laundries and bedding. A bite can burn, swell and itch. It wanders, so there’s no guarantee it will cross the areas we treat.
Huntsman spider: large, flat and grey to brown, with legs that spread sideways like a crab’s. It lives under bark and sometimes comes into houses and cars. Fast, but not normally aggressive. A cold pack can ease a painful bite. It is one of the wanderers that need specialist treatment.
Badge huntsman: fawn or grey on top, with a bright black, white, orange or yellow badge underneath, living on bark and foliage. Its bite can cause severe local pain, swelling, sweating and nausea. Like other huntsmans, it sometimes comes indoors, and it is not fully covered by a general treatment.
Daddy long-legs spider: a small, pale body on very long, skinny legs, with thin tangled webs in ceiling corners and behind doors. It is not considered harmful to people, and it eats redbacks. Its webs often sit along the cornices we treat.
Cupboard spider: shiny brown to black and easily mistaken for a redback, but with no red stripe. Tangled webs in sheds, garages and upturned pots. Bites are infrequent, though in two cases redback antivenom was used. It is a web-builder, the kind of spider our treatment targets.
White porch spider: pale with darker markings and very long front legs, in a loose, tangled web under eaves and verandas. Bites are rare but can ache for up to a day. It often lives on the outside of the house, where our perimeter spray goes.
Garden orb-weaving spider: stout, reddish-brown or grey, with two humps on its back. It builds a big round web between trees and shrubs each evening and takes it down at dawn. Reluctant to bite. Mostly in the garden, away from treated walls.
Golden orb-weaving spider: large and silvery-grey to plum, with yellow-banded legs and a big golden web that stays up day and night between trees and shrubs. It rarely bites, and a bite is usually mild. It usually builds out in the garden, away from the house.
St Andrew’s Cross spider: banded silver, yellow, red and black, sitting with its legs held in pairs on a web marked with a white zigzag cross. Like other orb-weavers, it is reluctant to bite. It keeps to the low garden shrubs.
Leaf-curling spider: fat and oval, red-brown with a cream pattern, hiding in a curled leaf hung in the middle of its web. As an orb-weaver, it is reluctant to bite. It is seldom near the house.
Bird-dropping spider: squat, black, brown and white, sitting still on a leaf and looking just like a bird dropping, often on fruit trees. Its bite is not considered dangerous. It keeps to the leaves, not the walls we spray.
Flower spider: small, with crab-like front legs, often yellow or white to match the flower it sits on, especially grevilleas and wattles. Not dangerous to people. It stays on the flowers, clear of anything we spray.
Lynx spider: a striped body and spiky legs, leaping after insects on garden plants. Little is known about its bite. It hunts on the plants rather than the walls.
Jumping spiders: small and often colourful, with big eyes, jumping on their prey on house walls, fences and plants. Timid, and they rarely bite. They hunt on the move, so they may not cross the treated areas.
Net-casting spider: a stick-like body and long, thin legs, holding a small net in its front legs and stretching it over passing insects. Look for it in garden shrubs on summer nights. Not considered dangerous. It rarely comes close to the house.
Wolf spider: drab brown, grey and white, with large eyes that shine in torchlight, living in burrows and leaf litter in gardens. A bite usually causes local pain or itching. Like funnel-webs and trapdoors, it is a spider our treatment can’t target.
Mouse spider: stout and black with a big, shiny head and jaws, and the males have either a red head or a pale blue-white patch on the body. Males wander from late summer into early winter, often by day. Treat a bite like a funnel-web bite. It lives in a burrow, so our treatment can’t reach it.
Sydney brown trapdoor spider: dusty-looking, with golden-brown hairs, and its burrow has a neat silk rim and no trip-lines. Its bite is not dangerous, but it is often mistaken for a funnel-web, so treat any bite with caution. Trapdoors burrow, so they are out of our treatment’s reach.
Sac spider: slender and cream, brown or yellow, resting in a silk sac in folded leaves or in wall and ceiling corners indoors. Bites are uncommon and usually minor. As a wanderer, it may not cross the cornices and skirtings we treat.

Not sure which spider you’ve got? Call us on 0410 244 244 and tell us what you’re seeing.

Yes, our spider pest control treatments are safe for pets and children when applied correctly. We use Australian-approved products and follow strict safety protocols. We recommend keeping pets and children away from treated areas until surfaces are completely dry, typically 2-4 hours after application.
