Prevent Possums From your Home And roof
If you can hear something heavy moving across your ceiling at night, it is usually a possum. So Pest Off removes the possum humanely and, just as importantly, seals the roof and eave gaps it used to get in, so it cannot move back the next night. Possums are protected native animals in New South Wales, so the work has to be done the right way, and we do.
Why removal alone does not work
Take a possum out and leave the entry point open, and another one moves straight into the warm, dry space you just cleared. That is why proofing is the part that actually solves it. We find every gap the possum is using along the roof line, eaves and broken tiles, and we close them, so the roof stops being an attractive home.
How possum proofing works
- Inspection: we find where the possum is getting in and where it is nesting.
- Humane removal: we remove the possum in line with NSW wildlife guidelines.
- Proofing: we seal roof gaps, eave gaps, broken tiles and access points.
- Optional deterrents: we can add a nest box in the yard so the possum has somewhere else to go.
What we use to proof the roof
Proofing only works if it matches how the possum is actually getting in, so the materials depend on the gap:
- Roof gaps and broken tiles: sealed or replaced so there is no route back into the cavity.
- Eave gaps: closed with materials the possum cannot chew or push through.
- Whirlybirds and vents: fitted with mesh guards, since these are a common uncontrolled entry point on older roofs.
- Broken flashing or lifted roof sheeting: repaired or re-fixed, since a lifted edge is often the original way in.
We check the whole roof line during the inspection, not just the spot the possum was last seen, because possums often use more than one entry point.

Removal And Then PREvention
Once you’re ready to proceed, we’ll attend your property, humanely remove the possum in line with NSW wildlife guidelines, and seal the entry points it was using. This usually means proofing gaps along the roof line, eaves and broken tiles, and fitting mesh guards to whirlybirds and vents where needed. Our goal is to create a barrier that stops the possum getting back in while keeping the roof looking and functioning as it should.
3
EXTRA PREVENTION
For properties where possums are likely to keep visiting the yard, a nest box can be installed as an optional extra. It gives the possum somewhere else to den nearby, away from your roof, which reduces the chance it or another possum tries to move back in once the entry points are sealed.

Signs you have a possum, not a rat
A possum sounds heavier and slower than a rat or mouse. You’ll usually hear it just after dusk, when it wakes and starts moving toward the roof exit, and again before dawn when it comes back in. Scratching that starts and stops in bursts, along one section of ceiling, is typical possum movement rather than the constant scurrying of rodents. Some homeowners also notice a strong, musky smell in the roof space, or droppings around the eaves that are larger than rodent droppings.
Possums are protected in NSW
Brushtail and ringtail possums are protected under New South Wales law and managed under NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service guidelines. That means they cannot simply be taken away and released in bushland. The lawful and humane approach is to remove the possum on site and seal your home so it settles somewhere else nearby. We handle the whole process the correct way, so you are never at risk of doing the wrong thing.
