What Attracts Rodents to Your Home?
Rodents are often drawn to properties that provide easy access to food, water and shelter. Overgrown lawns, dense garden beds, wood piles, stored materials, cluttered yards and untidy vegetation create ideal hiding places for rodents and snakes alike. Pet food left outside, unsecured rubbish bins, fallen fruit, bird seed, compost, and food scraps can all attract rats and mice, while leaking taps, pet water bowls and other water sources provide the moisture they need to survive.
Because snakes commonly feed on rodents, a property with a rat or mouse problem can quickly become attractive to snakes as well.
How Small a Gap Can Rats and Mice Fit Through?
Rats and mice are incredibly flexible and can squeeze through much smaller openings than most people realise. A mouse can fit through a gap as small as 6 mm: about the width of a pencil-while a rat can enter through an opening of around 12-20 mm, roughly the size of a 20-cent coin. If they can fit their head through an opening, the rest of their body can usually follow. Common entry points include gaps around pipes and cables, roof tiles, wall vents, garage doors, weep holes, damaged weather seals, roof voids and cracks in walls or foundations.
