Solar Panel Bird Proofing With Bird Mesh for Homes & Commercial

Why pigeons love the gap under solar panels

The space between your panels and the roof is warm, dry, shaded and hidden from hawks. To a pigeon that’s prime real estate. Once a pair nests they keep coming back to the same spot, and the droppings build up on your roof and in your gutters.

That mess isn’t just ugly. Pigeon droppings are acidic, so over time they eat into roof coatings and flashing, block gutters and downpipes, and the debris can foul the underside of your panels. There’s a hygiene side too, which is why you want the birds properly shut out rather than just shooed off.

What solar panel bird mesh actually is

Bird mesh (sometimes called pigeon proofing or a solar skirt) is a purpose-made wire mesh that clips to the outer frame of your panels and closes off the gap all the way around. Birds can’t get under it, and airflow and drainage still work as normal.

Two things separate a job that lasts from one that rusts out in a couple of years:

• How it’s fixed: we use non-penetrating clips that grip the panel frame. No screws, no drilling into the panel or the roof. That’s what keeps your panel warranty and your roof’s waterproofing intact.
• The mesh material: standard galvanised mesh is fine for most inland Sydney roofs. Near the coast it’s a different story (more on that below).

The coastal catch: why beachside homes need marine-grade

This is the one most people miss. If you’re anywhere near the water, whether that’s the Eastern Suburbs, the Northern Beaches or Sydney’s harbourside, salt in the air will chew through ordinary galvanised mesh far faster than it would a few suburbs inland. You end up with rust streaks down the roof and a mesh that’s failing right where the sun and salt are harshest.

For coastal and beachside homes we fit 316 marine-grade stainless steel mesh, the same grade of stainless used on boat fittings for exactly this reason. It costs a bit more up front, and it’s the difference between proofing your roof once and doing it again in two years.

Homes vs strata and commercial

Homes are usually a single roof and a single visit: inspect, clean out under the panels, remove any nesting, fit the mesh, tidy up.

Strata and commercial buildings are a different beast. Multiple roofs or large arrays, height and access requirements, and often a body corporate that needs the work documented. We handle the access and safety side, work in with building managers, and can quote a whole complex rather than unit by unit. If you manage a block where residents are complaining about pigeons on the solar, that’s very much our lane.

Does it damage the panels or void the warranty?
