The 2026 Rat Bait Law Change And What It Means for Sydney Homeowners
In March 2026, the APVMA restricted the strongest retail rat baits to licensed professionals only. Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs), the heavy-duty products that used to sit on the shelf at Bunnings, were linked to secondary poisoning of native owls, raptors and family pets and are being withdrawn from retail shelves over 12 months.
SGARs are potent and fast-acting, lethal to rodents after a single feed. The problem is what happens next. When a rat or mouse dies from an SGAR, the compound stays active in its body. Any owl, kookaburra or family dog that eats that carcass absorbs the same poison. SGARs cause internal bleeding, and by the time symptoms appear in a non-target animal the damage is often already advanced.
Vitamin K is the antidote, but treatment is intensive and not always successful.
That secondary poisoning risk, documented across Australian wildlife for years, is what finally drove the APVMA to act.

After Treatment
Following your initial rodent treatment, you will likely notice a gradual decline in activity over the first few weeks as the baiting takes effect. Rodent Inspection
Our licensed technicians begin with a full site inspection to assess the severity of the infestation and identify entry points. We check roof voids, wall cavities, subfloor areas and all external access points, gaps around pipes, weep holes, door seals, vents and roof penetrations, to build a complete picture before any treatment begins. This inspection determines station placement, baiting strategy, whether the problem is rats or mice or both, and which proofing work is needed.

Rodent Baiting and Treatment
Once we have assessed the infestation, we set up tamper-resistant lockable bait stations in the locations where rodent activity is confirmed, following all current placement regulations. Outdoor stations are for rats only, positioned within two metres of a building and secured in place. For mice activity indoors, baiting is placed inside enclosed spaces such as roof voids, garages and feed sheds. We use Selontra Soft Bait Rodenticide, a professional BASF product whose active ingredient is naturally occurring, non-persistent and non-bioaccumulative, giving it a significantly lower secondary poisoning profile than anticoagulant alternatives. For commercial properties, we offer Bluetooth-enabled bait boxes that monitor activity in real time, logging movement data between visits and allowing us to build a custom program around the specific demands of the site.

Ongoing Rodent Monitoring
Every 35 days, as required under the APVMA’s 2026 regulations, we return to assess each station. If bait has been consumed, we refill and record the activity. If bait remains untouched, we assess and adjust. We search for and remove any rodent carcasses found on the property at each visit, wearing disposable gloves throughout. Alongside baiting, we work through your property to seal the real entry points: metal weep hole covers instead of plastic (which rodents chew straight through), door gap seals, vent covers and roof penetrations. Proofing is what stops the cycle, baiting alone only manages the population already inside.

Safe Removal and Cleaning
Rodent control is not a one-visit fix. Between inspections, we track activity trends across your property and adjust station placement and baiting strategy as the situation changes. If activity increases, we respond. If it drops to zero and stays there, we discuss whether the program can be scaled back. The goal is long-term, documented control, not just a short-term reduction that rebounds within weeks.
The Bait We Use, Selontra
We use Selontra, a professional rodenticide made by BASF, and there are two straightforward reasons we chose it: it works better than anticoagulant baits, and it is significantly more wildlife-friendly.
Selontra’s active ingredient is cholecalciferol, a naturally occurring form of Vitamin D3, and it is not an anticoagulant. It works by disrupting calcium regulation in rodents rather than interfering with blood clotting.
On performance, Selontra controls rodents up to three times faster than anticoagulant rodenticides and has a stop-feed effect, meaning affected rodents stop feeding on bait and non-bait food sources shortly after consuming a lethal dose. That reduces the number of treatments required, minimises bait wastage and reduces the risk of contamination from foraging rodents.
On wildlife safety, the active ingredient is neither persistent nor bioaccumulative. It breaks down rapidly in the environment and does not build up in animal tissue the way anticoagulants do. This gives Selontra a significantly lower secondary poisoning profile. Dead rodents that have consumed Selontra do not carry the same risk to scavenging birds, predators and pets as those killed by SGARs.
